RYA Coastal Skipper Preparation & Exam

Duration: 7 Days (5 day preparation and up to 2 days of exam)

Start from: Royal Clarence Marina, Gosport
Sailing area: The Solent ( Chichester Harbour to Lymington)
Type of Yacht: New Dehler 39SQs
No. of Students: 5:1

Prerequisites for Coastal Skipper: Age 17 or over, 800 miles (50% in tidal waters) logged within 10 years prior to examination, 30 days seatime, 2 days as skipper, 12 night hours, VHF (SRC) and First Aid certificates. For holders of the Coastal Skipper Practical course completion certificate, the seatime requirement is reduced to: 400 miles, 20 days seatime, 12 night hours and 2 days as skipper.

The Coastal Skipper Preparation course is a 5-day course, followed by 2 days for the exam. During the Coastal Skipper Preparation course the instructor will try to polish off your existing skills, and fill in any cracks as necessary, to help you pass the exam. The Coastal Skipper Preparation course is ideally suited for persons wanting to get a professional qualification for the sailing industry, but do not yet have sufficient mileage or experience to take the Yachtmaster qualification, or for someone who just wants to be tested. This course is therefore taught by one of our most experienced instructors.

This week will be taught within the confines of the Solent, and so students are strongly advised to undertake the RYA Coastal Skipper Practical course to obtain training and experience of sailing a vessel offshore, before attending a "Prep" course.

During this "Prep" week, the instructor is not able to teach the entire RYA syllabus, and so the student should ensure that they meet the minimum criteria above, and satisfy themselves that they have sufficient skippering experience. This course consists of long days, particularly during the summer months, as it is essential that you get the opportunity to sail at night, and students should be prepared for it, however all of our previous students leave the course "happily tired".

On the Thursday the instructor will give you a realistic debrief on what they expect your chances to be during the exam, and the expected outcome.
