The Ondeck Atlantic Adventure 2012
Portsmouth - Portugal - Madeira - Cape Verde - Barbados - Antigua
|
The Atlantic Adventure is split into 3 individual legs, each one increasing in time and distance. Setting sail from the Portuguese port of Porto in early October, the 3,500 nautical mile voyage to Barbados takes around 6 weeks to complete, ending in the third week of November.
Options are also available to add the Atlantic Delivery and/or Hidden Caribbean Adventure to this voyage. The first 2 legs of the Atlantic Adventure consist of fast cruising and teaching whilst the final leg, from the Cape Verde Islands to Barbados, is a competitive match race sponsored as a Red Cap Event by Mount Gay Rum.
The Atlantic Adventure is not just about sailing but also about visiting places you may not do otherwise. Ondeck allows you time in port to step off the yacht and go and explore the varied islands of the Atlantic. If you are taking part in more than one leg, expect to spend between 5 and 7 days in each of the leg turn around ports.
If you don't have the time to do the whole adventure in one go, you can gain confidence and experience over a number of years taking a leg at a time as each leg is no more than 2 weeks in duration.
Atlantic Delivery - (Portsmouth, UK to Porto, Portugal) - 700nm |
|---|
The Atlantic Delivery can either be done as a trip on its own or as an add on to the Atlantic Adventure. We recommend that anyone wishing to take part in the Delivery has some sailing experience as the yachts will cross the Bay of Biscay which is notorious for unpredictable weather. The intention is for the Delivery to be a non-stop passage, but we allow extra time in the schedule in case there is a need to stop to wait for a weather window during the trip.
Atlantic Delivery Itinerary:
Crew Arrive in Portsmouth: 1st October
Total cost for Delivery - £695 |
Leg #1 : Porto (Portugal) to Funchal (Madeira) - 850nm |
|---|
The 850nm passage from Porto to Madeira takes around 11 days with varying wind conditions. This leg consists of a short coastal cruise, to Vilamoura, followed by a 3 day offshore passage to Funchal, Madeira. This is an ideal leg for experienced crew to get their sea legs back and for most a chance to experience a real ocean passage for the first time. Upon arrival in Funchal a warm welcome can be expected from the Clube Naval and the local people of Madeira.

Leg #2 : Funchal (Madeira) to Sao Vicente (Cape Verde Islands) - 1058nm |

This 1058nm ocean leg takes us South into the tropics and the North-East trade winds. This 6 to 7 day sail takes you between the Canary Islands before making landfall in Mindelo on the unspoilt and remote Cape Verdian island of Sao Vicente, near to the West African coast. Few visitors arrive by sail so expect a warm welcome from the locals.
